Stewardship, Not Hustle: Building a Business That Does Not Cost You Your Soul

Hustle culture promises freedom and often delivers burnout. Stewardship offers a better way to build.

Hustle culture tells us that success belongs to those who sleep least and work most. Rise at four. Never switch off. Your competitors are working while you rest. Many of us have absorbed this message so deeply that we feel guilty for taking a Sunday off.

As a woman of faith in business, I have had to ask a harder question: whose business is this, anyway?

Owner or steward?

An owner believes everything depends on her. A steward knows she has been entrusted with something that belongs to Someone else. Stewards still work hard. Jesus’ parable of the talents commends the servants who put their resources to work. But stewards work from trust, not panic.

That shift changes how we make decisions. A steward asks not only “Will this make money?” but also “Is this faithful? Is it sustainable? Does it honour the people involved?”

A steward still works hard. She just stops working as though she were God.

Rest as a business strategy

God built rest into creation. Sabbath was not a reward for the productive; it was a reminder that the world keeps turning without us. Many of the best decisions I have made in business came after rest, not after another late night.

Practically, this might mean protecting one day a week, setting office hours, or refusing work that requires you to abandon your values or your family.

Measuring success differently

Profit matters. A business that does not make money cannot serve anyone for long. But stewardship adds other measures: the health of your team, the integrity of your dealings, the impact on your customers and your own wellbeing.

This week, look at your diary and your bank statement side by side. Do they reflect stewardship or hustle? Choose one change, and make it.
