Rooted Before Blooming: Why Growth Starts Underground
We want to bloom quickly. God often starts somewhere less visible.
We live in a culture that celebrates blooming. The promotion, the launch, the glow-up, the before-and-after photo. Very few people post about roots.
Yet anyone who has grown anything knows that roots come first. A plant that blooms before it is rooted will not survive the first dry season. What happens underground determines what can happen above it.
The unseen work
Spiritual growth is similar. Before we produce visible fruit, we need a foundation that can sustain us: stillness that steadies us, prayer that connects us, Scripture that feeds us and trust that holds when life is hard.
That work is often slow and unseen. It does not look impressive. It may feel as though nothing is happening. But roots are growing.
Before we produce fruit, we develop the foundation that sustains us.
Why I wrote Rooted & Blooming
This is the idea at the heart of Rooted & Blooming, my yearlong devotional journal. It moves through three phases: Roots, where we build stillness, prayer and trust; Stem, where faith is tested in identity, relationships and boundaries; and Bloom, where we grow into purpose, generosity and courage.
Each day brings a passage of Scripture, a reflection, a question, one small step, a prayer and room to write honestly. It is not designed for perfect streaks. Miss a day if you must, then come back.
Start with one root
You do not need a full year to begin. Choose one root to tend this week. Five minutes of silence each morning. One verse read slowly. One honest prayer. Water it, and wait.
